“Welcome Home” Prayer Wheel
Based on traditional Tibetan prayer wheels, the wheel sends your prayers up to heaven as you spin it.
The Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association invited six artists to make “comfort blankets” in collaboration with notable Canadians. I was paired with Reverend Brent Hawkes, of the Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto. Reverend Hawkes received the Order of Canada for his pivotal role in the legalization of same sex marriage in this country.
After meeting with him I decided to make a Tibetan prayer wheel, using the motto of his church, “welcome home”. The wheel, along with the five comfort blankets, was exhibited in the Reading Room of the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa, at an event recognizing the work of the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association. It is now housed in the chapel of the Metropolitan Community Church.
The wheel was fabricated by Frank Bunn, and stands 3’ high. Wood, ball bearings, paint, paper letters, and a bell. 2013.
